Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) Rwanda office conducted a Mid-evaluation for the KOICA “Ultra Poor Graduation Project for Women Headed Households”; From June 23 to 24, 2022, in Rutsiro and Rwamagana districts, a project that is implemented in partnership with World Vision and The Better World with a grant of 2.7 million US Dollars from KOICA Rwanda, which is approximately 2.7 billion RWF. The project’s aim is to improve the lives of the poorest women headed household using ICT and it is being implemented within a timeline of 2 years (2021-2023).

KOICA Rwanda office visited two of the most successful beneficiaries who participated in the project to monitor their current situation and check the implementation status of the project.

This project has provided basic livelihood support and education programs to meet the most basic needs.

The first beneficiary, Ms. Claudine, is a woman who was raising six children in extreme poverty but after participating in the “Mindset Change training “as part of the project, she was able to learn how to manage her assets and resources. With the money she saved through savings, she purchased a sewing machine and started making clothes and this resulted into profits. She currently has five goats, three chicken and two cows. In addition, she is farming on supported farmland to prepare meals for her family and make additional profits.

“I’m so proud to be the best example of a savings group and I’m really grateful for this project for providing enough support for me and my family.” She said,

The second beneficiary, Ms. Daphrose, lost her husband and could not participate in various community gatherings such as Umuganda because she had no formal clothes, and all her children had to stop studying. However, she started farming with the support of cabbage, carrots, beet seeds, and others, and by doing it not only did she achieve additional profits by growing high-yield crops like Pili Pili; and selling them to the market every week, but she also bought a small amount of farmland that she had had to sell in the past.

‘’After participating in this project, I was able to provide my children with a balanced diet for every meal, and I was able to pay for health insurance for my family. I appreciate everyone who supported the implementation of this project.” She said

For the past year, this project has provided basic livelihood support and education programs to meet the most basic needs for vulnerable women headed households who have not even had a chance to stand on their own feet and strengthen their capabilities in agriculture and financial management. And in addition, to raise awareness in these households, an awareness campaign within the community was conducted. LMMS (Last Mile Mobile Solution) system is an integrated data management system that was used to digitize monitoring and management.

KOICA Rwanda office, World Vision, and The Better World are actively supporting women headed households to establish a foundation to overcome extreme poverty in various ways, such as expanding agricultural activities, increasing livestock, and opening stores based on the systematic financial knowledge of beneficiaries.
