MUHANGA: Women trained to prevent the Plastic Items Effects on Climate Change

Many studies indicate that women's attitudes toward plastic pollution and the prioritization of health and profit lead to different, more..., In fact, the plastics value chain is a near-perfect example of how gender norms and roles lead to inequalities when they are not addressed head-on. Even the material “plastic” is gendered. At least in the sense that the chemicals used to make it affect men and women differently, and if that is not taken into account when assessing safe levels of exposure, it can harm women disproportionately. Women’s bodies generally store a higher proportion of fat, which provides a greater reservoir for bioaccumulating and lipophilic (fat-loving).

Urugoli Media trained more than three hundred persons (300) about promoting women inputs on fighting against the effects of plastic items on climate change, where women were three hundred (300) while men were one hundred (100) as the debate theme was about promoting women inputs to prevent plastic items effects on Climate change that is the reason why the number of women attended this event was very high. On 18th August 2022, In Muhanga District, Shyogwe Sector, Mubuga Cell, Mapfundo Village.

This event was implemented by Urugoli Media under grants of Rwanda Governance Board (RGB), United Nations, and UNDP in the Programme on Deeping Democracy through strengthening citizen’s participation and accountable governance (DDAG).

In her opening remarks Diane Mushimiyimana, The Managing Director of Urugoli Media started her speech by introducing Urugoli and thanking partners of this event, later she told the general audience that this community debate will not end in Muhanga only.

She said” Urugoli is a media organization disseminating, distributing and gathering news about Politics, Sports and Entertainment, Gender, Education and so on with the aim of promoting women in the country’s socio - economic development.

In this debate, people were given time to express their thoughts on the theme of debate where they all said that this debate was very important because they learnt from it a lot.

Kubwimana Providence is a one of the many people that was trained about the bad effects of using plastic on climate and she had no had no skills and information about how to protect the climate but after this debate they learn a lot from it and they will no longer destroy the climate.

She said, “Before this training we have no information and skills about how to protect the weather and climate but after this event we will start to protect the environment in general”.

Mr. Emmanuel Bavugamenshi, the executive secretary of Mubuga cell in the name of Muhanga District and especially Shyogwe sector, He started his speech by thanking Urugoli Media in General as the good partners of Muhanga District for choosing their sector of Shyogwe.

And he promised the attendees that he will deliver and reveal good report to his elders about how this event was very necessary to see if urugoli Media will come back to share its experience to the people of Muhanga District.

In his words, he said “I want to start my speech by thanking Urugoli media and its partners the way they choose to visit our village and share their experience with us. This shows a good partnership we have together and we want it to be strong and go far and of course we want you to come back”. Urugoli Media is doing this campaign while the process of extracting and transporting fuels, and then manufacturing plastic creates billions of tones of greenhouse gases. For example, 4% of the world's annual petroleum production is diverted to making plastic, and another 4% gets burned in the refining process. Over the years, it has been proven that climate change is a global challenge requiring an integrated global response along with the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities. Rwanda is committed to taking urgent action to mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change. As part of UNFCCC, Rwanda has joined the Paris agreement with a goal of limiting temperature rise to 2oC with an effort to reach 1.5oC compared to pre-industrial levels.
