Rwamagana: They glorify Gender equality as a result of the development

Some of the residents from Kigabiro Sector in Rwamagana District are happy, as findings of development they attribute to Gender equality.

They have told the press, said that after comprehending about the principles of Gender equality, if has improve helped in speeding up their development.

Kagabo Cecille, is among the parents who explained about the development they have registered.

She said, it all requires teamwork, working together. “We work together hand in hand, if one is engaged in profit-oriented activities, then another one is occupy to be busy in other related works., as a result, this speeds up development, towards our family and our children” She added.

Sebagisha Jean de Dieu, he’s a parent said that they ‘re still some Men who think that they are specific works for the girls and boys, such as mindset must be uprooted.

“Some of them are still conservative about the ancient mentalities’, where a girl is expected to do such works however, I personally can’t take a decision without consulting her” He added.

Knows about the principle about Gender Equality, he who can violate it would do it internationally. They have comprehended about it. It has been evidence that coming together magnifies ability. Another matter which learnt about.

A woman who feel like being the head of the household, and this would render, the man feels that there wasn’t any gender quality, but now it’s clear and they are working collaboratively. Citizens are thankful that is helpful towards development.

They have emphasized that it has been helped with regards to saving money for health insurance, as a result and enables children to study well. Thus, improving the nutrition of the children and they are happy in the family.

“The principle of Gender equality has improved the livelihoods of the Citizens; it is evident that there is an improvement. Initially the Citizens could hardly comprehend it, thus now there is an improvement, at the both sides of Men of a man or a Woman.” Said Mbonyumuvunyi Radjab, The Mayor of Rwamagana District.

Otherwise, he explained to the wedded couples, about the essence of upholding gender equality. “If a boy can study and become a mechanic or a builder, the girl too has such rights.” He added.

Rwanda stands out globally for its efforts in advancing GEWE, particularly in political participation. 52% of cabinet positions are held by women. Significant progress has also been made in many sectors.

The Constitution of the Republic of Rwanda of 2003 revised in 2015: Enshrines the principles of gender equality and women's rights and provides for the minimum 30% quota for women in all decision-making organs. • Rwanda Vision 2020: Considers gender equality as a cross-cutting issue. In 2008, the Rwanda Chamber of Deputies was the first elected national parliament where women were the majority. The proportion of MPs who are women is at 61.25% today, way above the current global average of 26.4%. Rwanda has been at the top of the IPU’s monthly ranking of women in national parliament for years.

How did it get there? And how does it stay there?

The GoR has adopted regional and international treaties, conventions and agreement that promote gender equality including but not limited to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948), Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women (1979), Beijing Platform for Action (1995), the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 (2000), Sustainable Development Goals (2015), Kampala Declaration on Sexual and Gender Based Violence (2011), Maputo Protocol to the African charter on human and peoples' rights on the rights of women in Africa (2003), and Solemn Declaration on Gender Equality in Africa (2004).Rwanda has established an enabling legal framework to support gender equality and women empowerment.

The National Gender Policy, National Policy against Gender Based Violence, National Family promotion and Protection Policy among others have been developed and approved by the Government to ensure that the principle of gender equality is mainstreamed across sectors. The National Strategy for Transformation (NST1) sets to strengthen and promote gender equality and ensure equal opportunities for all Rwandans whilst fostering the culture of solidarity with vulnerable groups.
