Yvonne Makolo to chair the IATA Board of Directors

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) supports aviation with global standards for airline safety, security, efficiency and sustainability.

Rwanda Air CEO Yvonne Manzi Makolo has been elected to be the of head board of directors in the International Air Transport Association (IATA), and become the first woman to hold the position.

Placing Makolo in this position is one of the decisions from the IATA General Assembly that held in Doha, Qatar on Monday, June 20, 2022.

It is planned that this mandate will start in June 2023, and she will replace Mehmet Tewfik Nane who reached to this position in 2019.

Yvonne Makolo will lead the IATA Board of Directors which already includes the CEOs of the world's largest airlines such as Michael Rousseau of Air Canada, Benjamin Smith of Air France - KLM Group, Douglas Parker of American Airlines, Mesfin Tasew Bekele of Ethiopian Airlines and Pieter Elbers of KLM.

Since its establishment in 1945, IATA has had 290 member airlines from 120 countries. Headquartered in Montreal, Canada, the agency's responsibilities include establishing standards of conduct for air transport companies, overseeing commercial compliance between these companies, regulating air cargo transportation and determining the size and shape of airports, especially their roads.

Yvonne Manzi Makolo became the 81st person elected to chair the IATA Board of Directors. The appointment of Makolo was officially congratulated by Akbar Al Baker, The Group CEO of Qatar Airways and Secretary-General of Qatar Tourism.

He mentioned this in his speech on 6th Aviation Africa summit which is being held in Kigali Rwanda from 12-13 September, 2022 and he said I would like to congratulate CEO of Rwanda Air Makolo who is set to became a first women to serve as IATA’s chair on the Board of Governance, Of course she has made history for your country and the whole Africa should be very proud of her, she is the first women and first African to have that position. He added

In 2018, Yvonne Makolo was appointed to lead Rwanda Air, the previous year she had been appointed as the Deputy General Manager in charge of Corporate Communications in RwandAir, after more than ten years at MTN Rwanda as Director of Publicity.

In 2003, Makolo left Canada, where she had been working in the field of technology for 10 years, and returned to Rwanda to work in a World Bank project run by World Links to install computers in schools and train teachers to use them before going to MTN Rwanda in 2006.
